Session 23: The Watchers

The Journey

The Storm Saints begin their journey back to Kazzadyr. For the most part the journey is rather uneventful, however, a few days in to the journey a thunderstorm blows in. The Storm Saints bunker down and travel slowly through the storm. In the days to follow, they are greeted by overcast skies and begin to feel as if the clouds are following them in their journey.   One night while Astragoth was taking watch everyone is awoken by a large beam of light shining down on the group as they sleep. Everyone begins to disentegrate and fears for their lives. For a moment they black out. When they come back to their senses they find themselves in a large corridor with a round table and two humanoids sitting at the table.  

Enter The Watchers

The two humans at the table introduce themselves as Xavier and Banrik. They are the leaders of The Order of The Watchers. Banrik is rather upset at the party as the paladin they killed while saving Maz was his son. Xavier, against Banrik's judgement, seeks to reason with the party and explain why they need Maz. The Watchers protect against extraplanar threats, and since Maz is from another planet they need to know what she knows and try their best to protect her. She isn't the first person they have dealt with that has come from another place/time/planet, and they're afraid she won't be the last. They wish to learn what Maz knows from her world, then block Maz's memories of her past life, and instill her with new memories and a new life in Afelthyr. They believe this will keep her safe from anyone who might seek to use her otherworldly knowledge as a means to gain power.   Maz is very much against giving up her memories and pushes back. Xavier then explains that this is a process they are familiar with and have done before. Ben is then put into a cone of silence while Xavier explains that Ben was one of their past subjects and that he too comes from another world.   In the talks with The Watchers, The Storm Saints eventually convince Xavier and Banrik to let Maz keep her memories and stay with them at Nebulight Citadel. The Storm Saints also learn of The Emperor's shadow organization known as The Crescent Shadow. They discover that the raven like humanoid they crossed paths with earlier on the road was an agent of The Crescent Shadow known as Morvig. The Storm Saints become increasingly interested in The Crescent Shadow and Xavier presents them with the opportunity to be sworn in as members of The Order of The Watchers and to seek out members of The Crescent Shadow to ultimately bring them down.
